Snow clearance efforts persist following multiple avalanche strikes in northern India

Border Roads Organisation takes in after avalanches hits northern India’s Union territory Ladakh.

The clearance is taking place in Zoji La pass in Kargil district on March 23.

Visuals showed huge chunks of snow rolling down the mountain, blocking the road. In another visual a clearance vehicle is seen clearing the pass for communication.

Few weeks ago the BRO started the snow clearance work on the Zojila Pass on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway that connects Kashmir to Ladakh.

BRO’s Project Beacon oversees the upkeep and clearance of the road leading up to zero point near Zojila starting from Sonamarg, while BRO’s Project Vijayak is responsible for clearing the road from the Drass side.

Beacon has cleared more than 15 avalanches of different sizes, but new avalanches continue to occur between Tyagi Nala and India Gate, resulting in the temporary closure of Zojila Pass on March 23.
